This course is for high school, and college (pre-university), and university (undergraduate and postgraduate) students who wish to improve their understanding of moles and molarity.
On this course we will look at moles (not the animal), and at their relationship to molarity, and Avogadro's constant. We will also look at how to calculate the number of moles in a solution, the molarity of a solution, and how many grams of a compound we would need to make up a solution of a given molarity.
An understanding of these subjects is crucial for any scientists that is going to be working in a lab.
I have over 16 years of experience teaching on undergraduates biomedical science degrees, and I have worked as a research bioscientist for over 25 years.
Everyday I perform the types of calculations covered in the courses offered at Math4Biosciences, and through my teaching I know how, and where, students struggle with the maths they need to do to pass their classes and to carry out their research.

I'm Nick and I put this course together...
When I was at school, and at university, I struggled with some of what I called the 'chemistry maths', that this, the sort of maths you have to do to work out moles and molarity, dilutions, and percentage solutions. These concepts, and calculation, I just didn't find easy. I couldn't see the point, I could grasp their importance and at times I thought my teachers and lecturers were just torturing me with these calculations for their amusement.
What really helped me was a book, now long out of print, that covered all the basics (and some of the not so basic) that I needed for the courses I was taking. It put a lot of what I was trying to do in context, and helped me through the tricky maths with worked examples and exercises.
I really didn't get to grip with 'chemistry maths' until I was working as a research scientist. Then it all suddenly became clear. You get the maths wrong, then the solutions in your experiment are wrong, and nothing works. It's important.
When I started teaching I found that students were still struggling with 'chemistry maths', and over the years I have delivered lectures and labs in which we have gone over the maths, and I have even posted numerous (hundreds) of maths questions online for my students to try. However, what was missing was the book like I had when I was a student. So I decided to write one.... It never saw the light of day, and I realised that a book was not the way to go as it wasn't interactive, and wasn't much of an improvement on what I had 30 years earlier. Hence this course, and Maths4Biosciences, came about....
This course, moles and molarity, forms the basic 'cornerstone' of a lot a biology and chemistry, and so it is an importantsubject, and hopefully this course will help you understand the key concepts and calculations.
